Steely Dan Stolen!

safety October 29th, 2008

Last night, Steely Dan, my touring bicycle, was stolen from the front rack outside of the YMCA.  That bicycle was the most valuable thing I owned.  I moved here from Ohio on that bicycle.  It’s not just a bike….it’s my best friend….for gosh sakes the bike is top friend on myspace.  To anyone who races or can afford to spend a lot on bikes, Steely Dan is not even that nice, either.  But to me…it almost feels like someone died.

Steely Dan is a puke-colored made in Taiwan steel framed Bianchi Volpe with red writing on it and a huge dent in the top tube.  It has a pink handlebar bag with flowers on it that is covered with road grime accumulated over thousands of miles.  It has a red Chris King headset that was a gift to myself last year.   It has red Crank Brothers 50/50 pedals that I bought on my last tour when I decided that I would rather wear my Vans and platform pedals than be stuck walking like a duck in my Sidi road shoes…Ultegra components…Fizik saddle…and my Jandd Expedition rack is still on there…or was…

It would be nice if I could envision that whoever stole the bike will derive even an ounce of the joy that it brought to my life, but I know that’s not true.  They will either strip it down or turn it over to someone else for maybe 75 bucks.  If you see a green and red Bianchi touring bike around town, please let me know.  Where is that waterbottle mounted taser when you need it? Just kidding….

So sorry to hear about that!!! I’m really saddened. Who is Smurfette going to go on her revival ride with now? Long live Steely Dan!

That sucks! How was it locked? Post a pic so we know what to look out for… Was this the downtown YMCA?

Oh, POO! Sad news. I know people who have found their stolen bikes at the “bike shop” that used to be at 5 Points that is now located at Stone and 17th. Post a picture; we’ll keep our eyes open.

azt- i’ve been looking on craigslist…thanks for the heads up.

    d- here is the pic

Em- smurfette will just have to settle for riding with cookie monster (the xtracycle bike)

karlito- yes it does suck. unfortunately it also sucks how i locked it…i have a long shackle u-lock and i haphazardly locked it to the first space (closest to the front entrance) in the rack by the downtown y…i made a grave error and only locked the front wheel while intending to lock the wheel and frame…so basically they just undid the skewer and took everything but the front wheel…i guess you could say that via my negligence i was asking for it…

janet- yes i intend to check at that place…also i was thinking of you because some of those little maps i was talking about were in the handlebar bag when it got stolen…in addition to all kinds of random things i collected on my last tour…what a bummer!

    hey lauren,
sorry again for your loss. I mentioned that your bike got stolen to a friend of mine yesterday and said to check out play it again sports because a friend of his just bought a clearly stolen Trek 520 bike from there recently. I’m going to try and call around different used sporting goods places today and see if we can get lucky.

    Erik,
if we find out a pawn shop or store that is selling a stolen bike, are they legally obligated to return it as stolen goods? Or can they sell your own stolen bike back to you?

That 5 points bikes place is mad shady! I was in there last weekend and every bike looked like it could have been hot.

  9. Maxwell Says:

I hope you get your bike back before something bad happens to it. I’ll remember that photograph.

I would also wish much pain and anguish upon the person who took it … but I don’t think you’d agree with me there.

Such an awful, helpless feeling! On the bright side: think of La Suprema #38! I think Ed should move you to the head of the line.

I recently had my bike stolen from the very same rack. Maybe we should plant a nice bike out there and watch.
