You want to get a ticket or dontcha?
One the things I find the most irksome about the Tucson Police Department’s various bad policies is their habit of telling wounded cyclists that if they have to write up an accident report they are going to give the cyclist a ticket.
Here’s how it works:
A cyclist gets hit by a car, and is lying in [...]
Chandler area motorist on his way to buy a Hummer kills five people, gets one year in jail
Ed over at AZ Bike Law linked to this awful story earlier today and I just read it.
It was just before 10 a.m. on July 19, 2007, a Thursday. According to court records, Myers, then 24, was in his 2007 Chevy Avalanche, headed west on McDowell Road in Scottsdale, on his way to meet his [...]
Carhead and Allen Johnson
The best source of news on Officer Allen Johnson has been KVOA. The driver still has not been charged in that incident, but from the tone of the Pima County Sheriff’s Dept., I am thinking she eventually will be.
One comment on the KVOA site caught my eye. It said:
Cycling in Tucson streets is [...]
City Considering Electric Bike-Sharing Program
AZ Daily Star reports that the owner of the electric bike store on University has proposed an initiative for Tucson to invest $35K in an electric bike sharing program. It sounds as if the program would be based around a short-term rental system through which you can use a credit card to rent the bikes:
” [...]
Carhead in the Seattle affair
“Carhead” is a word used to describe the bias found in many news reports and other discussions about conflicts between bicyclists and motorists. Check it out here in the text of CNN’s deplorable piece on the Seattle Critical Mass affair (from Seattle affiliate KING):
Title: Bike Protest Turns Violent: A group of cyclists protesting their [...]

Jose Rincon Ghost Bike is Stolen
The AZ Star reports that the Ghost Bike for Jose Rincon has been stolen from its eastside location and all that remains are some of the flowers that were once part of the memorial. Ari Shapiro, who installed the Ghost Bike, was contacted by the city earlier this week and was informed that the [...]
Another "Bicyclist collides with bus" story
I’ve written about “carhead,” the bias we often encounter that favors motorists over cyclists.
The Portland Oregonian has a story today about Austin Miller, who they say “collided” with a bus and was killed.
What appears to have happened is that directly before the crash, Miller took a right turn from a bike path onto another bike [...]
Velo News on the Cupertino fatalities
Velo News has a great piece summing up the various disturbing threads of the whole Cupertino incident Lauren and I have been reporting on. Kristy Gough and Matt Peterson died when a Sheriff’s deputy crossed the center line and drove into them head on. Peterson was killed instantly; Gough died at the hospital. [...]
Carhead: Mercury News can’t seem to face the reality in recent bicyclist fatalities
I’ve reported before on Carhead, the subtle prejudice we Americans have that always supports the car and blames the cyclist. There’s a nice example of it in recent reporting by the Mercury News over yesterday’s horrific and tragic accident in which two cyclists were killed by a sheriff’s deputy who appears to have fallen [...]
