A Happy Ending to the Steely Dan Saga
Steely has been recovered!!!! Last night my best friend Jared, who is a wizard, hunted down the guy who had my bike! A big thank you to one of our blog readers, Tony. Tony came into Ordinary Bike Shop while I was working and told me that he thought he may have seen someone riding my bike down near 10th st. and the bike path. I texted Jared and he went out on his bike searching the area. He spotted two people, one on Steely Dan and the other one riding with my Ksyrium wheel on his handlebars.
Jared called the police and told them that he spotted a guy on the bike that was reported stolen. The police told Jared not to follow the guy, and Jared said, “yeah right.” He followed them until they stopped and went inside somewhere. The police showed up and around 6 p.m., Jared called the bike shop and told me that he had found the guy with my bike and that he needed the police report number. My boss Tang let me run to my house and get the number. Then the police confiscated the bike and gave Jared and Steely Dan a ride to Ordinary in the wagon. The guys that had the bike said that they had purchased it from some guy on the street for $50.
A few lame modifications were made to poor Steely. They put some really ugly black and white bar tape on it and flipped the handlebars, and my rear rack and handlebar bag are gone which is a bummer. But other than that everything is still intact! The cops were nice but one of them told me that my bike is ugly….haha. Then he said, “Well it is unique I will give you that. It probably helped a lot in spotting it.” Thanks to everybody who kept an eye out for it and for all the concern. Long live Steely Dan!

A good and suspenseful narrative from Lauren. The bike seems wonderful — almost human yet retains its bikeness. Those are the ones you keep around. Thanks for this.

Good for you! If Dan would like to be one of my MySpace friends you can click my blog link. If you don’t like bike wrecks though I don’t suggest reading my blog. Erik can tell you I get a little snarky in my commentary…

We’re all happy for you and Dan! But I guess this means you’re going to ride away after all, huh? I was selfishly hoping this would keep you here with us…

Awesome!
I was hoping this story would have a happy ending. There was too much bad karma around that theft for it not to happen.

What is your bike’s MySpace ID? If you can have your bike as a friend I would like Dan to be one of my friends too. I did a search for it but I came up with a bunch of Steely Dan tribute bands’ videos, 100 pages worth (at 20 per page).

Great that you got the bike back Lauren !! –Bikes have a way of becoming part of yourself–Especially when you work on them and tune them to your own style. Let it cool off a little and set it up again. –Peace–D
