Another reason to ride a bike…
An article in the NY Times today entitled “Biofuels Deemed a Greenhouse Threat” describes two recent studies published in the journal Science that examine the land-use issues associated with biofuel production. Not only are greenhouse gases are released in the process of turning natural ecosystems into cropland for biofuel production…but more alarming is that clearing natural ecosystems for cropland “deprives the planet of natural sponges to absorb carbon emissions.” One of the studies determined that the amount of greenhouse gases released in this process results in 93 times more emissions than what would be saved by using the biofuel grown each year on that land instead of petro-based gas.
I’m still in favor of biofuel though…as long as its the kind you eat and digest and turn into leg power on your bike…Yay broccoli! Have a nice weekend, everyone…I will leave you all with a photo from my bike tour of rest stop I made at a gas station from the future:
