Bells

Joie de vivre November 27th, 2009

I didn’t put a bell on my bike until I started riding in the Tuesday Night Bike Rides a couple of years ago. Now I don’t know how I ever got along with out it. I ring the thing all the time.

Late last night I was lying on my couch recovering from a wonderful Thanksgiving meal at my friends Louise and Randy’s place, and I heard the quiet swoosh of bike tires on the street swiftly gliding past my window. Just as they passed my house, I heard two bicycle bells ring. I still don’t know who it was, but two friends wanted to let me know they were thinking of me as they passed my window.

How civilized! And how unlike a car’s bellicose horn!

makes me think that car manufacturers should be required to install bike bells, too, so drivers can use them in an urban context instead of their horns. Car horns terrorize bikers because we’re not enclosed in a cage, and serves to escalate situations. yep – i think i like the idea.

I love my bell. I really shopped around until I found one with just the right tone. It makes me happy every time I hear it. In my old job, at the end of the day, I used to ring the bell as I walked my bike down the hall at the end of the day. Everyone always smiled.
