Ciclovia Tucson!

Who’s up for it? There are already folks in Tucson working out the details, but I’m sure they’ll need help promoting it when the time comes. I hope my pictures from Bogota have persuaded my readers how cool this can be, and how badly Tucson needs one!

Here’s Tom Thivener, Tucson Bike/Ped Program Manager, on the Tucson Ciclovia:

I’ve been a big fan of the ciclovias since I got to experience Portland’s first Sunday Parkways in summer of ‘08. There’s a small group of bike/ped advocates that meet a couple times a month here in Tucson in planning for a ciclovia type event here in Tucson next year. I’m pretty sure the event will happen in 2010. We’d love for it to be the signature event of Bike Fest, which is next April.

Do it! I’ll plan a trip back to be part of that!

Which streets would we close off?

It is a great idea. San Francisco has been doing it forever in Golden Gate Park and it draws a lot of people.

Golden Gate Park works because the area that is closed off is within the park and is very pretty. There are fairly easy ways for cars to avoid the area, so it isn’t too much of a disturbance.

Personally, I think 4th Avenue, probably south of 6th Street, might be a good idea. It isn’t the funnest place to drive anyway and there is already lots of pedestrian and bike activity there.
