Bicyclist killed after crashing into vehicle in downtown Tucson

A bicyclist was killed early Monday when he collided with a vehicle while riding downtown.

The 47-year-old man, whose name has not been released pending next of kin notification, was riding west on Congress Street near Toole Avenue about 5:55 a.m. when he lost control of his bike, hitting a vehicle that was also heading west on Congress, said Sgt. Diana Lopez, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.

The cyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene, Lopez said.

I am awaiting more information about this, but at the moment it is the usual announcement that the cyclist was at fault.

I sure hope you delve into this morning’s bike accident….find more witnesses, etc. While I realize plenty of bikers are at fault (& downtown there are some who seem mentally deficient), by the look of the damaged back wheel in this case, I have a feeling he was rear-ended. Less than a month ago a block from there, I was nearly clobbered by a driver who was just passing my bike, and started turning into a parking place on 4th Avenue – when I was even with the front passenger seat of his car. I slammed my hand down hard on his fender, pushing away and swerving at the same time. It was amazing I even stayed upright. If I’d gone down, I would have been hurt seriously and the bike would have been under his car. Thanks for listening. Sincerely, Marylka Pattison

I just saw a photo of the bike on the daily star website. THe streetcar tracks are there. I wonder if that had anything to do with it?

I have the use of that phrase, “Who was not wearing a helmet,” used as if it is some kind of contributory negligence not to wear one of those useless helemts. You wouldn’t see an article on a rape inferring such contributory negligence (such as “X, who was wearing a short dress…” because it is rightly offensive to make such an assertion. Why is it not the same when a cyclist is the victim of motorist negligence?
