El Grupo invites you to the Tucson Bicycle Classic this weekend!

My friend Ignacio who coaches the El Grupo Youth Cycling Team has asked me to remind everyone about the Tucson Bicycle Classic this weekend, which El Grupo will be competing in. And I just learned that Lauren will be riding in it as well! Here is Ignacio’s invite:
El Grupo Invitation
This might not be France and the Tour, nor is it our Tour de Tucson, however this weekend is Tucson’s biggest bike race and the youth of El Grupo want to invite you to enjoy the racing. Racing will take place Friday afternoon, Saturday morning and Sunday morning. Sunday morning might be the most fun time to watch. Go to the intersection of Greasewood and Anklem at 8:30 and enjoy. Bring a lawn chair, cooler, and something to make noise with and enjoy the racing. The El Grupo kids start racing at 8:45. Thanks Tucson!

what happened to the Gates Pass stage?
March 31st, 2008 at 11:09 am
Hi- I found out over the weekend that the Gates Pass stage was moved to Green Valley a few years ago. Apparently a cat 2 rider was struck by a car and killed during the race in 2003, and I believe it occurred on the descent of Gates Pass. I found this information on the rider:
Garrett Lamire
2003
Ojai, CA
22-year old cyclist, killed after colliding head-on with a vehicle during the 2003 Tucson Bicycle Classic. He was a UCLA student and hoped to become a professional cyclist.
