Geocaching and ghost bikes
memorial August 25th, 2009
Geocaching is a kind of high-tech treasure hunt except mainly without the treasure.
I got an email not long ago from a person asking my thoughts on placing geocaches at ghost bikes around town. I spent some time thinking about it but never got back to him since I didn’t really know what he was even talking about.
Now this. Notice the comments section — very different from the sort of vitriol you see on the comments section of the AZ Star articles about bicyclists.
And it is nice to see that Laura Varela’s ghost bike is still up.

There is a similar pursuit to geocaching, called Letterboxing. Someone hid a letterbox (it wasn’t me!) at the Andria Ligas ghost bike just a couple of days after we put the bike up: http://www.letterboxing.org/BoxView.php?boxnum=44355&boxname=Ghost_Bikes

Maybe I’m being overly sensitive, but it seems to me that using the ghost bikes for geocaching would not be appropriate. It would be disrespectful, not only for the fallen cyclist but their loved ones as well, to include the ghost bikes in a fun/recreational activity like geocaching.
