Not to be a nag, but Lucian Gregg didn’t ride a brake, either, and he has left behind many grieving people.

Fixie does not necessarily mean brakeless. I ride a fixed with brakes.
I also know Santa Cruz and E. Cliff Drive in particular. The road where Lucian perished is very steep and narrow. As soon as I heard of Lucian’s death I suspected immediately that he couldn’t stop in time because of his brakeless riding.

Fritz you are right of course–I too ride a fixed-gear bike with a brake on it. I’ve changed the title to say “fixie with no brakes.”

Here’s another potential problem for fixed gear riders – the braking standard varies from state to state. Some have a performance standard. The bike must be capable of stopping in a certain distance from a certain speed. The older standard requires that the braked wheel be capable of skidding on flat, clean pavement. One of my fixed gear bikes has a brake on just the front wheel. I know I do not want to initiate a skid with the front wheel. Gravity finds me far too attractive.

A hipster buddy of mine used to ride brakeless on his fixie… Until he rear-ended me when I stopped short for a car. After that he put on a front brake.

Favorite Past time… Sit at Sabine’s and watch all the brake less kids try and slow down to turn into Ordinary. Better times than the mechanical bull at the bar.
