The route will be 9 miles long: head out east on East Camino Campestre, north on South Randolph Way, east on Broadway Boulevard to Wilmot Road, south to 22nd Street, then west on 22nd Street, back to Reid Park. Escort for the ride will be provided by the Southwest Rangers Motorcycle Escort Service. (Sahuarita/Green Valley area riders will meet at the Green Valley Recreation East Social Center at 5:30 pm for a 6:00 pm, 7 mile ride.) Helmets are required for all riders.
The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. It is held annually, at many locations around the world, to commemorate cyclists who have been killed or injured while riding on public roads, and to ask that we all share the roads safely.
The ride, which is held during national Bike Safety month, is also meant to raise awareness that cyclists have a legal right to use the public roadways. Participating cyclists may be wearing black arm bands or red arm bands (red – if he/she has had a bike/motor vehicle accident). A “ghost” bike on the back of a truck will also follow the cyclists.
The annual ride began in 2003 when Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas, Texas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus on an empty road and was killed. With only 10 days notice, the event attracted 1,000 riders.
Nearly 8,000 riders participated in last year’s series of rides at 105 locations – in all 50 United States’ states, and 17 other countries.
