SF Bike/Police training video
I am in slack-jawed awe, Our eternal quest for Platinum Status, TPD shortcomings, opportunity knocks, safety January 30th, 2009
If the Tucson Police Department were to put out something like this it would only be hilarious — in a bad way.
But here’s something to look at as a target for where we need to be. A good start would be a forced viewing by all TPD traffic officers. Check it out.
My favorite part is where the officers remark that they have to take a report any time a bike is injured in a collision. And the general attitude that bicyclists actually have rights to the road. That alone would go a long way to improving things with Tucson PD.
Hat tip to Allison for point this out to me!

Slow speeds where do find them?
Anyone found out how hard it was to track a license plate going 45 miles down the road?

Assuming it’s same-direction traffic, it’s not all that difficult to discern the license-plate number on a vehicle going 45 mph, especially if you practice doing so.
The problem is that the TPD has only a limited interest in license-plate numbers. You also have to be able to identify who’s in the vehicle, which is nigh impossible at those speeds.

On an only slightly related note, for the last several days “Player Vs Player” has been doing a funny bit on being pulled over in a car by a bicycle cop (for doing 12mph in a 10 zone) that the artist says is based on a real experience. It starts at http://www.pvponline.com/2009/02/02/twelve-in-a-ten/
