…Speaking of right hook accidents

Uncategorized January 10th, 2008

A driver right hooked me this morning as he was turning into his apartment complex. Oblivious to having hit me, he proceeded to his designated parking space. When I confronted the man, he said that he had signaled to make the turn, and I replied that signaling when you are behind a cyclist is not an effective way of alerting them.

It appeared that he may have been stoned because his eyes were very red. So I said to him, “Apparently you were too stoned to realize that your deceleration and turn would not allow any clearance for a cyclist moving at 20 mph to get around. From my perspective I did not see you until you turned and I ran into the back of your car. In the future you need to remain behind cyclists before turning because this situation could have been a lot worse.”

He apologized but then brushed me off as he grabbed a bag of cat litter out of his car and walked away. With Erik’s recommendation, I have reported the incident to the Tucson Police Department. We’ll see if any actions are taken.
