Tucson Biking on NPR
Kylie Walzak, a fellow Tuesday Night rider, wants everyone’s input about bicycling in Tucson. You may have encountered her with a microphone in hand as she was interviewing and recording part of the ride last night. Here is a message from Kylie:
Hi Tuesday Night-
I’m preparing a radio spot for KUAZ to air on a Friday for Arizona Spotlight.
I’d like to hear from you- participants, organizers, foot-downers, etc.
Please email me with your thoughts, concerns, opinions, etc. regarding Tucson, the bike community, what Tuesdays mean to you, and what you’d like to see happen in Tucson in the coming years as far as bikes are concerned.
Please email Kylie Walzak at: kwalzak@gmail.com
and please include your name.Depending on how the story goes, we may be able to send it out to other, national news programs as well.
Thanks!
-Kylie
So let’s help her out and maybe the Tucson bike community could even get some national attention on NPR.

Lauren had a great comment last night when interviewed. She said that for Tucson to be considered a “bike friendly” community, more than just the bicyclists have to be friendly!

So if bicyclists in Tuscon air their grievances on NPR for all to hear, will that encourage more bicycling, or just confirm to the non-cyclists how insane, dangerous and un-fun cycling is? Please think about what you say and how say it.
Put another way: Given how much some of you gripe about cycling I’d think you hate bikes! I ride because it’s a pleasant and fun way to get around.

Hi Fritz, I think you misunderstood the intent of Kylie’s radio spot. This story is not about “airing grievances.” Its about what it is like to be a part of a bicycling community…and much of that centers around the community congregating for the Tuesday Night Ride, which is definitely not “insane, dangerous, and un-fun.” It is an exciting weekly gathering that promotes solidarity among bicyclists in Tucson.
Yes, there will probably be some grievances shared…because there are improvements that can be made to make riding a bike even more fun…but there will also be people who want to talk about how fantastic the ride is and how it has unified part of the bicycling community, etc. The radio spot is intended to encourage more bicycling through sharing the experiences of those for whom riding a bike is a way of life.
