Tucson Citizen op-ed on Kevin Robinson-Barajas

Uncategorized September 15th, 2008

The Citizen, at least, is starting to notice how many cyclists are getting killed.

There’s an odd dearth of nasty comments to the article, too. They are there, but they don’t completely dominate the discussion, thankfully.

Lauren and I have been reading the articles about him and the responses to the post below. He seems like such a great kid, somebody anyone would be proud to know and eager to watch grow up. Be careful out there folks. As Jean Gorman always reminds us: life is precious, not just to you but to your friends and family.

I have been feeling intensely paranoid about being run over lately, the comments on that article don’t help. Oy.

Cyclist are so hard to see on the roads!
I would be afraid to ride a bike on a busy road knowing there are a lot of motorist just like me who just aren’t aware of cyclist as they should be!

I think there needs to be more protection for cyclists, I can’t count the number of times I’ve just missed them at round-abouts and junctions.

And I’m one of the most cautious drivers around.

I live in Tucson. There are so many wide bike paths here that I feel very safe cycling. I must admit I cycle without a helmet which I probably shouldn’t but the wind in my hair feels so darn good and it gets so darn hot here…

The trouble with bicycling is that it only takes one accident and the odds of serious injury or death are too real. That said, I’ve been biking to work for about 3 years now. It’s only a couple miles and I can use residential roads most of the way, so it’s a relatively safe route. And I can’t remember once when I’ve had a close call, but I’ve seen lots and lots of other bikers not following laws. Through stop signs with cars stopped, and not even slowing. Running red lights at Ft. Lowell and Dodge, with cars all around (once when I was stopped at the light, and the guy just pedalled past me across Ft. Lowell). Biking wrong direction. I’m convinced the persnetage of bikers that flagrantly break the law is higher than drivers. But it’s common for auto drivers to stop at stop signs and wave me through, when it’s their turn to go. Very nice but they should be predictable and take their proper turn. Sevaral times I’ve even had drivers stop when I’m at a sign and they have no sign, and wave me through. So my experience is that extra-courteous drivers far outnumber the malicious ones. But I end where I started – it only takes once on a bike, and it could be the last.
