Tucson City Prosecutor Bicycle Safety Diversion Program

Our friend Ignacio urged us to inform readers about this new program available to people who are cited with traffic infractions on the bike:

“In an effort to improve the safety of bicyclists in our community, the City Prosecutor’s Office will dismiss a cyclist’s civil traffic citation if he or she submits proof of completion of the Road 1 Safety class offered by the Pima County Bicycle and Pedestrian Program.

If you wish to take advantage of this opportunity you need to take the following steps:

1. Register at www.bikeped.pima.gov or call 243-BIKE

2. Bring proof of completion to the City Prosecutor’s Office located at 103 E. Alameda, Suite 501 prior to your next scheduled court date.

The class is free.  Part 1 of the class lasts for 3 hours and includes a review of state and local laws and a discussion of crash types and crash avoidance techniques.  Part 2 of the class is required for completion of the course and requires a bike in good ridable condition.”

A cyclist who has had his or her citation dismissed through this program is not eligible for another dismissal for one year.

    Hey,

The other week I got a massive ticket from the cops while on my bike riding through U of A. When I called the Justice Courts to sign up for this program they didn’t know what I was talking about. I ended up calling the Prosecutor’s Office and was informed that this program doesn’t apply to tickets received on campus. Just thought I’d point that out to save others the confusion.

Don’t leave us hanging… what was the ticket for? Reasonable? Unreasonable? What should we avoid doing in front of the UAPD?

It is not clear on on the instructions that there are 2 parts to the class anymore. Just 4 hours are described offered every Sat morning. Spaces fill up so call right away.

My citation was while I was on foot. I am trying to find out if I can take the bike program instead of the car program because it applies to me much better and is free whereas it is $200 for driving class. Would be really nice if there were a walking safety class since they are giving out tickets for walkers to make sure they follow driving laws that I did not know applied for a walker. Silly that they would be just as steep for peds when I am a far less dangerous machine.
