Tucson Tuesday Night Community Bike Ride for beginners

Uncategorized November 12th, 2007

I am getting a lot of hits on this blog from people googling “Tuesday Night Bike Ride Tucson” and I suspect this has something to do with the recent Tucson Weekly article on the ride.

So, just in case it wasn’t clear from the article:

1. We meet at 8 PM at the flagpole near the main entrance to the University, which is at Park and University.

2. The ride is usually 5-8 miles long and it is a very casual, slow ride that just about anybody can do. People show up on every imaginable kind of bicycle. One guy even did it on a unicycle, and I saw a woman on a tricycle the other week, too!

3. If you are worried that you cannot ride that far, you can always take off early, because the route winds all around the downtown area.

4. Please try your best to bring a light and at least a reflector in the rear. It’s the law. (.pdf of “Share the Road” booklet with Tucson bicycle laws.) Kids under 18 need a helmet.

5. After the ride we play a game called “footdown,” in which everyone who wants to rides (extremely slowly) in a giant circle. Over time the circle begins to shrink and folks start to lose their balance and have to put a foot down. Once you do that, you’re out. Eventually it comes down to two people, usually Wes and Rocky, and the circle has shrunk to the point where just staying up at all is difficult. It’s a great game and everyone has fun.

6. Everyone is welcome!
