Tuesday Night Ride Draws Over 100 Cyclists!

Uncategorized September 12th, 2007

113 people gathered at the flagpole on the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, Arizona last night at 8pm for a bike ride. Riding on major roads, everyone was instructed to stay in the right hand lane. Riders stuck together at a steady pace, passing pertinent communications down the line. The ride stopped when someone got a flat and we all waited for them to be back in commission before continuing. Later, riding down 4th Ave. someone shouted from the sidewalk, “What are you riding for?” “Fun!” was the response shouted from multiple cyclists. “…cool,” he said back.

The ride, which started earlier this summer with three friends, has grown into quite an event. There have been various themes. Last night the theme was superheros and people were dressed with capes, masks, tin foil hats, and one with butterfly wings. The ride usually ends with a group game of “foot down,” where the object is to be the last one with their feet still in the pedals. While you do not have to participate in anything you do not want to, everyone is encouraged to join in, and “skill level” is not the focus.

The ride is not stressed as a political event, yet the awareness a group of 113 cyclists brings to car traffic cannot be understated. And when we are riding responsibly and sticking together we set a good example, all the while having fun!

This ride seemed to attract all sorts of people, on all sorts of bicycles. I encourage everyone to check it out! Join us every Tuesday at 8pm at the UofA flagpole on University just east of Park.
