Velo News on the Cupertino fatalities
Velo News has a great piece summing up the various disturbing threads of the whole Cupertino incident Lauren and I have been reporting on. Kristy Gough and Matt Peterson died when a Sheriff’s deputy crossed the center line and drove into them head on. Peterson was killed instantly; Gough died at the hospital. A third cyclist, Christopher Knapp, was badly injured, but survived.
A recent story from the Mercury News describes the problems one of the cyclist’s families has had paying the medical bills and burial costs. My advice to her: this looks a lot like a wrongful death suit to me and I think she has a whole lot more coming from the county than her late daughter’s medical bills. Even so, the News uncovered some troubling behavior on the part of the County, whose officials said the only reason they had not already offered to pay these costs is because they could not locate the family.
The Mercury News reporter pointed out that she had found them by looking in the phone book.
