Wal-Mart introduces full-service bike department

Uncategorized December 13th, 2007

I was in Target the other day and walked by the bicycle section. I was astonished at how cheap those things are. I didn’t really look at the quality of the bikes, I just saw the price tags. They were Schwinn bikes, cruisers and townies. Unbelievably cheap it seemed to me. I didn’t want to know–if I buy a new bike again it will be from Ordinary or Rogue or some other local bike shop, but I did not realize until my trip to Target what kind of competition those folks face.

Now it looks like they may start getting some competition from Wal-Mart in the repair business as well.

    From the link:
“The neighborhoods in the area of the new Highland Village store are connected via a system of biking and walking trails, so Wal-Mart worked with the city to include bike routes to the store.”

Must be nice to have that kind of pull with the city, huh? I’d like to see the response a small local shop would get if they requested that the city put in bike lanes to their store.
