"We’re looking for accountability"

Uncategorized September 20th, 2007

Cyclists from the Bike Couriers Bike Shop in Louisville, Kentucky took it to the streets this week to call attention to pedestrian and cyclist fatalities. Pulling a coffin replica on a bike trailer, the group stopped at the offices of the mayor, police chief, and commonwealth attorney. “We’re looking for accountability,” said Jackie Green, co-owner of the downtown bike shop.
Sadly, this is the second time they have done this ride. The first ride was in response to the death of George “Chips” Cronen who was killed by a van while riding his bike earlier this summer. This Tuesday’s ride was in response to the loss of Apryl Hunter who was killed while trying to cross the street last week.

In other news, the city of Muscatine, Iowa is setting a different example. Clark Andrew Anderson is accused of hitting and killing a cyclist and has now been charged with homicide by vehicle. Anderson is facing up to 25 years in prison.

I don’t know too much about how the propositions in AZ work.

    Would this be possible:
A bicycle and pedestrian safety proposition on the AZ ballet that would read something like this:

If a driver is found at fault in an accident where a cyclist or pedestrian requires medical attention from a doctor, the driver would automatically loose their license for 2 years on top of whatever punishment they would receive normally. 5 years on a second offense, 10 years if accident causes death.
