What’s the carbon footprint of your egg?

Uncategorized January 30th, 2008

Lauren has been talking a lot about this New York Times article lately. It has nothing to do with bicycling but it’s a topic a lot of bicyclists have on their minds: how do we reduce our carbon footprint, particularly since Tucson is pretty much ground-zero for global warming in North America? Bicycling is a great way to do that of course. But it turns out that reducing our meat intake will go a long way, too. That is, unless you believe Tom Danehy of the Tucson Weekly, who wrote last week:

What would happen if everybody on Earth just magically stopped eating animal products tomorrow? How many hundreds of millions or billions of people would die in a short period of time? We have people starving to death all over the world now. How could we possibly grow enough food to feed everybody? The food riots would get ugly in a hurry.

I have never been able to figure out where that guy is coming from.

My solution? Ride your bike, back off on meat and food that comes from far away, and try to have fun.

Studies show that cyclist will leave the biggest carbon footprint by living longer healthier more active lives and thus consuming and using more natural recourses. They will also be producing off spring with active lifestyles that can live to be over 100.

    That is hilarious cary!

The old adage, well sort of: for everything you gain, you lose something; for everything that is good, there is also bad associated with it….

Since suicide seems like a sub-optimal solution, maybe we should change the measure to per-diem carbon footprint rather than per-lifetime carbon footprint. Doesn’t that make more sense anyway?

It’s not how much you ride your bike, it’s how little you drive your car.

Isn’t it a little like saying “If you don’t smoke or drink you do not live longer it just feels like it.” – On yer bike, as we say in the UK, got to be good for you and hopefully everyone else.
Mind you riding around a city I am sure from the exhausts from the autos you do not have much chance of living longer.
