Yellowstone Ciclovia!

Who knew? Yellowstone National Park roads closed to motorized use for one month each spring.

They advise you to bring bear spray and be prepared to turn around if wildlife is blocking the road.

s.b.”They advise you to bring bear spray and be prepared to turn around when wildlife block the road.” (when we forget our bear spray)

I knew about this because I once read about it in Outside or Nat Geo Adventure mag. It remains filed under the “I need to go do this” category. Thanks for the reminder!

    In 1982 I led a (then) Bikecentennial
transamerica trip and the only place I
was really concerned for the group’s
    well-being was in Yellowstone. There
were cars everywhere, buses all over
the place, RV’s trailing jeeps behind
their boats on rather narrow roads that
were not in great shape. One rider in the
group had to ride straight to the next
campground in order to stake out a campsite
for the night, it was so crowded. We figured
Yellowstone was Wyoming’s third largest city
that time of year! On our way out at the
entrance station, I asked the ranger for our
entrance fee back. She didn’t give it. I wrote
in the leader diary that I thought that the
park should be taken off the route. I guess it
eventually was as it appears to be an optional
side trip now. We spent an off day in the
Tetons to recover. Seems this is the best the
Park Service could come up with to enjoy it
on bicycles; otherwise, best to drive in then
    go backcountry.

    Coghauler,

I did the Bikecentennial last year, and I do believe it is still on the route. I had a good time in Yellowstone, but it was Memorial Day weekend, and so it was crowded. People were very courteous and gave me enough room on the road, and so did the bears!

I was unable to find a place to stay myself, and ended up staying at a Park Ranger’s place. He was himself a touring cyclist and his job was to predict Old Faithful every day. Good times…

    Yeah, that’s what’s great about
    bike touring…the open-ness.
